Where on Earth is Aruba!!

Well . . . here it is. Yes, it's just a tiny dot on a map, but if you ever visit us you can read on the license plate of a car cruising on the island's roads; Aruba 'One Happy Island.'


The Dutch Caribbean island lies at the heart of the southern Caribbean, 19 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, about 2 hours and 30 minutes by air from Miami, Florida and within easy flying distance of other major U.S. cities. It is 19.6 miles long, 6 miles across at its widest point, with a total area of 77 square miles. Population is about 90.000.

Historical tidbits


100 A.D. The Caquetio Indians of the Arawak tribe were the first inhabitants. The earliest known Indian settlements date back to about this time.
1499 Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda arrives on the island.
1636 The Dutch take possession near the culmination of the Eighty Years' War between Spain and Holland. They remain in control for nearly two centuries.

1816 The island was returned to the Dutch by the English.

Political makeup

Until the end of 1985, Aruba was a member of the Netherlands Antilles.
The other island-members are Curacao, Bonaire, St. Maarten, Saba and Statia.

January 1, 1986 Aruba becomes an autonomous entity within the
Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Government based on the Western democratic parliamentary
system with elections being held every four years.
Chief of State an Aruban born Governor, appointed by the Queen of
Holland who represents her for a period of six years.
Parliament 21 members and constitutes the legislative power.
Council of Ministers The executive power and is headed by the Prime Minister.
Legal jurisdiction Rests with a Common Court of Justice of Aruba and the
Netherlands Antilles plus a Supreme Court in Holland.

Defense and foreign affairs of Aruba are the responsibility of the Dutch government
while all other tasks are carried out by the island's government.
