Connection FAQ

Q: I am building my house and the next step is the electricity part. What do I have to do to get power?
A: Make sure to let a recognized electrician do the installation. He or she must have a valid license so that the installation is done according to the local codes. Make certain, well in advance, that the installation is approved. We can't turn on your service if it's not approved. Drop in at one of our offices and fill out as early as you can an application form and pay the deposit. You need to show us a valid picture ID and a proof that you own the parcel. We accept copies of notary deeds and also the form you can get at the dept. of 'Hypothecaire en Kadastrale boekhouding' (tel. 5821747) located in the same office as 'Kadaster' in the post office building in Oranjestad. Always call customers service early in your building phase to find out exactly what you must do to get connected.

Q: How do I find out who is a recognized electrician?
A: Elmar and the Technical Inspection Service (DTI tel. 5824867) have a list of recognized electricians available to the public.

Q: What do I have to do to get the installation of my house approved?
A: Your electrician is responsible to submit the relevant documents to us. We decide how the installation will be carried out and then we register your application in our sytem. After that your electrician must take the application to DTI. Remember to follow up with your electrician, only after he or she has complied with all the necessary requirements can we together with a DTI representative, approve your home's installation. For more information call 5237131.

Q: How long will it take to get connected if I meet all the requirements?
A: Within 5 workdays after filling out the application.

Q: What if I want to change my current electrician who is doing the work for me? Can I do that?
A: Sure. You must notify DTI of this in writing and give us a copy of this letter.

Q: What happens if the connection cannot take place because the existing distribution network must be extended by Elmar for whatever reason?
A: This is why you must contact customer service as soon as possible. In case you did call us early in your building stage, the extension would have been included in our planning and the connection could have been carried out in a timely manner. If this is not the case, you run the risk of having to wait for a long time. For specific information on this matter call our Planning dept. at 5237106, 5237107, 5237116, or 5237117.

Q: Do I have to pay for the connection charges?
A: It is free of charge if the connection can be carried out directly above ground. If this is impossible, please contact Planning.

Q: What are the charges for an underground connection?
A: The difference between the above ground and the underground connection charges. For more info call Planning.

Q: How is the power point to the property determined?
A: Your electrician must visit the Planning dept. with the relevant documents and in consultation the power point will be established by us.
