If Your Lights Go Out

If your lights go out, the first thing you need to find out is whether the problem is outside or inside your house. Look out a window or go outside to see if your neighbor's lights are on.

If your neighbor's lights are also out than the trouble is most likely somewhere on our lines.

You need to:

Call us and let us know your power is out.

During office hours: 5237133, 5237147, or 5821521
After midnight: 5821521
When you call, please have the following information ready for a better service:
  • Address of the power outage
  • Whether the address is a residence or a business
  • How far the outage extends to the best of your knowledge
  • Phone number where you can be reached
If our lines are busy, please be patient. Wait a while, then call again. Your call is very important to us and the only sure way we have of knowing you are without power. Another option is to drop in at our Troubleshooting Dept. located at our main office in Wilhelminastraat 110, Oranjestad. It attends the public for emergencies 7 days a week, all year round, from 7.00 a.m. till midnight.

If only your lights are out than the problem is most likely a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse in your home. Circuit breakers and fuses are safety devices. They cut off power to an electrical circuit if it becomes dangerously overloaded or if a short circuit occurs. Your breakers or fuses are located in the service panel of your house.

You need to:

Check the equipment on the circuit to determine what caused the interruption, such as:

  • A defective lamp or appliance
  • An overload motor
  • A faulty socket or fixture
  • A worn-out or frayed appliance cord or extension cord
  • Too many appliances or lamps on one outlet
  • Make sure your hands and the floor you are standing on are dry
  • Push the breaker switch to the full "OFF" position, then back to "ON" or carefully replace the fuse
If you are unable to find the problem and the breaker or fuse keeps shutting off power, call an electrician.

In case of an outage, turn off major appliances.

Turn off televisions, computers, air conditioners and any appliances that use electric motors. This will prevent damage to your appliances and ease the initial load when the power is restored. Leave a light on so you know when service is back. Once your power is back on, you can use your appliances normally again.

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed.

Refrigerators and freezers are well insulated, so food will keep for hours if door-opening is kept to a minimum.
