Refrigerator/Freezer

Refrigerator/Freezer is the third largest energy consumer in your home.

Follow these tips to use it more efficiently:

  • Vacuum or dust your refrigerator condenser coils, which are located on the back or bottom of the unit, every 3 months. This will keep the condenser running better and energy costs running lower.
  • Defrost your freezer (if it does not have an automatic defrost function). Do not let more than 1/4 inch of ice buildup. Efficiency drops as ice builds up.
  • Set the refrigerator temperature at 38 - 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer temperature at 0 - 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Keep your refrigerator full but space items for proper air circulation.
  • Keep your freezer full and tightly pack the items.
  • Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Plan ahead so you can take out everything you need at one time.
  • Replace worn refrigerator and freezer door gaskets to keep cool air from escaping.
  • Do not place either your refrigerator or your freezer in direct sunlight or near any source of warm air such as the range or dishwasher.
  • If your refrigerator is more than 15 years old, consider replacing it with a new, more efficient model.
